People of the Pacific have a deep connection to the land, the environment and the ocean, Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the mother who connects us all. Oceans may seem vast and endless, but human activity is putting the health of our oceans in jeopardy. For oceans to keep sustaining us, we must find a way to sustain them.
The heroic navigators of A Waka Odyssey have journeyed far across the oceans, and all around New Zealand. Join us for a panel discussion as they share their stories, and insights into the dangers to oceans and animals. They will encourage us all to learn about the marine environment and ecology, and how we can get involved in protecting our oceans.
Guest Speakers:
Schannel van Djiken (Samoan Voyaging Society)
Raihania Tipoki (Te Matau a Māui Voyaging Trust)
Oceans in Peril is a Kupe Dreaming event and part of A Waka Odyssey, a week-long celebration of our place in the Pacific that includes the spectacular Kupe: Festival Opening Night.
