Haere mai – Come on board a full-day, waka-themed excursion for your students. 

First stop, step on board one of the waka hourua (traditional double-hulled sailing canoes) docked at Taranaki Wharf in Wellington Harbour and meet the Pacific voyagers.

Next stop is up to you – your class can choose its own adventure from four voyaging experiences:

1. TE PAPA: PACIFIC NAVIGATION PROGRAMME

Investigate Pacific migration, navigation and voyaging vessels. Visit an exhibition and get hands-on in the Hīnātore Learning Lab where you will use 3D design to create your own waka.

2. SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES: LOVE YOUR COAST

Learn about the effects that plastics have on the marine environment and simple solutions we can all use to reduce single-use plastics and prevent litter from getting to the coast in the first place.

3. WELLINGTON MUSEUM: JOURNEYS

Experience rich stories of journeys made to, within and from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the mighty Wellington Harbour. Tap into ideas of exploration, migration and conservation.

4. SPACE PLACE: NAVIGATION – SUN, STARS & TOOLS

Join a practical workshop to investigate how compasses and GPS work, followed by a planetarium show looking at navigation using the sun and the stars.
