Getting there

Please try and use public transport to travel to and from this event. Parking in the city will be limited. We recommend you get to the event early.

Closest bus stop: Courtney Place

Closest parking: Barnett St car park - entrance off Cable Street, Te Papa car park - entrance off Cable Street, or the Michael Fowler Centre car park - entrance off Wakefield Street. 

To get you safely home from this opening night event, additional public transport will be available: free buses will be running from Wakefield Street to Island Bay, Miramar and Seatoun; plus extended bus services to Newlands and Churton Park; and to Days Bay via the East By West ferry.

Taxi and private vehicle drop-offs are encouraged to be Te Papa, Post Office Square and Waitangi Park.

There will be NO onsite parking for the public, nor waterfront access during the vehicle lockdown.

Access information

Wheelchair accessibility: The wharf is flat access. 

Accessible toilets: Available on the ground floor of Te Papa. 

Accessibility Viewing Area: An area with clear sightlines to the on-water performance has been reserved and cordoned off for patrons in wheelchairs or with other accessibility issues, and their carers. Access to this area cannot be reserved, so is on a first-come, first-served basis. This area will be monitored by volunteers and Festival staff. You can find the area near the where the Hikitia Crane once lived on Taranaki Wharf.

Some Useful Information to help you enjoy Kupe: Festival Opening Night:

Permitted items: Umbrellas, portable chairs, stools, cushions and blankets are allowed to be utilised by patrons. Any chairs or umbrellas deemed to be obstructing or prohibiting the view of other patrons shall be asked to be removed or taken down. Personal cameras and phones are allowed. Liquor ban area is in place – anyone drinking alcohol will have it confiscated and may be removed from the area by police.

Toilets: In addition to the toilet facilities of nearby bars, restaurants and other businesses; there will portaloos located near Te Papa, Circa Forecourt, Upper Frank Kitts Park (at the lagoon side of park)

First Aid: Wellington Free Ambulance will be on site. First Aid kits located at Upper Frank Kitts Hub and Front of House (near Circa). Defibrillator is on the police launch.

Special Effects: The show includes dry ice being dropped into the water, and the use of smoke flares.

Ticketing: The Festival Box Office, located by the Festival Club (Pacific Crystal Palace) will be open from 4pm for patron enquiries and purchasing tickets to upcoming Festival shows. Festival staff here will also be able to advise early arriving patrons where to locate themselves and answer any FAQs.

Lost & Found: Found items will be handed in to the Festival Box Office on the night. Valuable property will be taken to Central Police Station following the event, everything else to the Festival office for collection.

Lost Children: are to be taken to the Wellington Free Ambulance Command truck located by the Circa forecourt.
